Laston Kadzuwa is a twelve-year-old standard 3 student at Kapudzama Primary School. His favorite subjects are mathematics and science and he aspires to become a medical doctor when he grows up. Like so many Malawian children, Laston is an orphan. He lost his father in 1997 and his mother remarried a man who could not afford to care for him. Laston lives with his elderly grandmother and works hard to help her with household chores and perform well in school. With the help of volunteers, Laston’s grandmother registered him at Kapudzama Community Based Organization, a Malawian-founded and run organization that supports orphans and vulnerable children in a rural district outside of Lilongwe. Goods for Good provides materials to support Kapudzama’s programs, which include a tailoring vocational program. Laston enrolled in the Kapudzama nursery school in 2003 and has been involved with the organization ever since. Laston recently received a school uniform that was made from the fabric donated by Goods for Good. Laston’s new uniform will relieve his grandmother from the a financial burden and will help Laston stay in school so that he can achieve his goal of becoming a doctor.
