goods for good believes that the opportunity to achieve is every child’s right. Research shows that a year of school can increase a child’s future earnings by 10% and a school uniform can increase school attendance up to 62%.

Did you know that, in Malawi, uniforms are required for students to attend school, but their $3 cost often prevents orphans from being able to afford them?

Our bundle of goods is a passport to an education includes uniforms, pens, and shoes, to keep orphans and vulnerable children in school. These goods also ease the financial burden on families that take in orphans, helping keep children in their communities and out of institutions.

Rather than simply give away uniforms, goods for good provides surplus fabric to community centers for vocational tailoring programs. These training programs teach adults marketable skills and give them the chance to form a community enterprise, a jointly-owned tailoring co-op, and earn an income.  As a graduation requirement, our tailoring students sew uniforms with excess fabric.  Children at their community centers receive the uniforms at the beginning of the school year so they can enroll in their courses.

We are thrilled to announce that Melissa Kushner, our Founder and Executive Director, has been named “Young Entrepreneur of the Year” by the World Entrepreneurship Forum.  On October 26, the U.S. Ambassador to France, Charles Rivkin presented Melissa with the award in Lyon, France.  Melissa addressed hundreds of entrepreneurs from all over the world at the award ceremony.

Melissa was recognized for her vision and commitment to social justice.  Past award winners include Sir Fazle H. Abed, Founder of BRAC and William Drayton, Founder of Ashoka.  An entrepreneur in her own right, Melissa also teaches and inspires community leaders in Malawi to become entrepreneurs themselves as they launch and run small businesses to support orphans in their villages.  Click here to see some of her acceptance speech.

NBC’s Luke Russert kicked off the speaking program that culminated with the “Local Leaders” short film that captivated the audience.  The evening concluded with dancing and music from DJ Chelsea Leyland. To see all more photographs from the evening, click here.

This week our team in Malawi delivered 35 sewing machines (pictured here) to our partner community centers. Thanks to this shipment, six tailor training courses will begin in January 2012.  72 tailors will graduate with the skills to become professional tailors.  They will create over 4,000 school uniforms for children during their training.

In order to sustain this program that benefits so many vulnerable people, we need the following:

  • Plain fabric
  • Buttons (small and white/transparent)
  • Elastic (for making trousers)
  • Threads
  • Zippers (fly front zippers)
  • Sewing machines (foot-pedaling, manual)
  • Sewing machine needles
  • Tailoring scissors
  • Trouser hooks
