A Big Day in Malawi

Today is election day in Malawi. The impoverished but relatively stable nation is holding its fourth democratic elections since the one party Banda regime ended in 1993.  Malawians will head to the polls to cast their vote in an election that pits current President Bingu wa Mutharika (pictured above) against political rival John Tembo, who worked under Banda when he ruled as dictator.

While Mr. Mutharika is expected to win a second term as President, it is unclear if his Democratic Progress Party will be able to win a majority in parliament.
